The 12 Days Gorilla Safari in Rwanda and Uganda is a medium safari that fits very well in the fortnight work leave as the remaining two days are dedicated to the flight transfers.  The safari allows you to explore Uganda in detail.   • Day 1: Visit the Gisozi genocide memorial and transfer to Volcanoes National Park

    After your  breakfast at your place of stay in Kigali city embark on the drive to Gisozi genocide memorial to pay a visit to the counts of Rwandese who lost their dear lives during the bloody genocide that befell Rwanda in the year 1994. The number of skulls line in the building and the respective writings gives you a fresh picture of what exactly transpired during that period.  After this encounter, you will have lunch in Kigali and then embark on the transfer to Volcanoes National Park 116km about 3 hours’ drive. The drive will take you through the amazing country side landscapes marked with rolling hills and the rural farmlands presenting an ideal round for scenic photographs. You will arrive in Ruhengeri in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 2: Do gorilla trekking and cross to Uganda

    After a thrilling breakfast from your respective lodge, you will gather at the Volcanoes Park Headquarters in Kinigi at 8am for briefing and the eventual start of the gorilla tracking encounter. The park rangers will give you the situation that surrounds gorilla trekking and the respective dos and don’ts for the very activity while enjoying a thrilling cup of Rwandan coffee and being entertained by the famous Intore dance demonstrating the traditional Rwandan society. Embark on the actual gorilla tracking hiking through the jungle of Volcanoes following the respective assigned gorilla family and in company of those the eight team mates that have been put together with you track a given gorilla group. The duration for the gorilla tracking tends to fall between 2 – 8 hours and the encounter is more that the ordinary. The hike through the jungle passing by amazing flora and fauna, the impressive and magical scenic landscapes of the Virungas would definitely leave you in a state of bewilderment.  The eventually one hour direct encounter with mountain gorillas seeing direct in their frightening eyes enjoying the beauty of their fur and the being entertained by the playful young ones settles your thoughts of the worthiness of the gorilla permit price. Return from this encounter and embark on the transfer to Uganda driving along the scenic Virunga massif where the chain of eight volcanoes lay in a stretch. After crossing to Uganda, you drive along the scenic Kisoro – Kabale Road with its meandering nature which makes it impressive to encounter. Branch off at Muko and connect to Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation dinner and overnight.

    Day 3: Do a sunrise boat cruise on Lake Bunyonyi and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

    After a relaxed breakfast, embark on a thrilling boat cruise on Lake Bunyonyi with its 29 Islands dubbed the lake of a thousand Islands. The boat takes you around these Islands amidst scenic views of the Kigezi Highlands. The 5 – 6 encounter gives you an opportunity to encounter the Island Communities as they cruise to and from the shore and others doing some fishing. Retreat for lunch after which you embark on the transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park arriving in the afternoon for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 4: Do gorilla trekking in the Impenetrable Bwindi & relax at the lodge

    Following breakfast at your lodge, you will gather at the respective park headquarters in the region where you are going to track for briefing at 8am. The briefing which is conducted by the park staff details the conduct of gorilla trekking activity and at this moment, the gorilla family to track is also allocated per a group of eight (8) people. The eventual heading to the mist is a remarkable experience that will form part of your life time adventure. The forest tends to be covered by mist in the morning and hiking through the forest is an amazing adventure that is worthy your gorilla permit price. The activity tends to last between 2 – 8 hours inclusive of one hour direct encounter with gorillas. Encountering the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is remarkably wonderful. These frightening and yet peaceful creatures would definitely welcome with fear and the silverback would have to punch a little on his chest to check your fighting status. Your concentration will be on your cameras as you tack as many photos as you wish without flash light to avoid provoking gorillas to reaction.  Retreat from the activity when your time is used up and then transfer to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 5: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and do game drive in Ishasha sector en route

    After breakfast transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park – the highest visited Game Park in Uganda. The drive involves traversing the rolling hill of Kigezi and eastern forested landscapes of Bwindi as you make your way to the north before approaching the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park – Ishasha where you will undertake simple game drive in search of tree climbing lions that tend to rest on the fig tree branches. The tree climbing lions thrive in only in this part of Uganda and in Lake Manyara National Park but Ishasha offers ideal encounters because of its short trees. You might be lucky to spot some and then continue to your respective lodge for relaxation and overnight.

    Day 6: Do morning game drive and after Kazinga Channel boat cruise and transfer to Kasese

    After an early morning cup of coffee, embark on the drive through impressive rolling savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth in search of wild game. The stretch to the Kasenyi plains where the mating ground is found offers you opportunities of encountering a range of wild game including elephants, buffaloes, water bucks and Kobs along with predators like lions, leopards and jackals. The game drive takes 3 – 4 hours and you get back to the lodge after the activity for relaxation and lunch after which you connect to Mweya jetty for an afternoon boat cruise. The Kazinga Channel boat commences at 2pm and 4 pm for the Marasa boats and 3pm and 5pm for the UWA boats. The cruise offers you opportunities of spotting Hippos and Nile Crocodiles and other counts of wild game that come to quench their thirst on the channel side. Return for the activity and the drive to Kasese arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 7: Do whole day Mount Rwenzori hiking & transfer to Kibale

    After breakfast, gather at Nyakalengija park headquarters to embark on the whole day hiking of the legendary mountains of the moon that rise up to 5,109m above sea level with snowcapped peaks. The hike exposes you to the ridges of the Rwenzori Mountains with impressive scenery of the entire mountain range which is the tallest in Africa and the third in terms of height following Kenya and Kilimanjaro in the second and first positions respectively. Rwenzori Mountains is gifted by impressive flora that is impressive to encounter during the hike. You will have a picnic lunch and then retreat in the evening to the start point. Upon returning, you will embark on the transfer to Kibale National Park arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 8: Do Chimpanzee trekking and afternoon Bigodi wetland Walk

    After breakfast at your lodge gather at Kanyanchu Tourism Center at 8am for briefing and eventual heading to the forest to encounter remarkable chimpanzees. This is your second day with chimpanzees but within a different habitat. Kibale Forest is very lush with mature tropical trees and plenty of fruit. Watching these chimps which are very well habituated (Kibale has the 95% of seeing chimpanzees compared to other habitats) as they munch this fruit, copulate, socialize, patrol among other aspects presents a memorable encounter on your safari in Rwanda and Uganda. The activity also lasts 2 – 5 hours including of one (1) hour direct encounter with the chimps. Retreat from the activity and embark on the transfer to Bigodi wetland for an afternoon wetland walk. The walk is an impressive eco-encounter where the local people are in charge of the product, its interpretation and the benefits gathered. The possible sights of a range of bird species including the Great Blue Turaco and swamp animals like Sitatunga occur in the sanctuary. Retreat in the evening to the lodge, relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 9: Do Mpanga tea estate cycling and transfer to Hoima

    After breakfast, embark on the cycling encounter in the Fort Portal tea estates traversing the undulating landscape of the area with amazing scenic views and rewarding biking lanes. You explore the tea estates and have time to share with the estate workers including participating in the tea plucking exercise. Retreat from this active adventure and embark on the transfer to Hoima about 5 hours drive arriving in the afternoon for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 10: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park. Visit Kibiro Salt Gardens en route and the top of the falls on arrival

    After breakfast, embark on the transfer to Murchison Falls National Park. You drive along the Albertine rift with amazing scenic views. You make a stop at Kibiro Salt Gardens and hot springs en route. The site has good sightseeing opportunities and also introduces you to the traditional methods of salt extraction that have been on use since the pre-colonial era. The site is also on Lake Albert shores thus offering close view of the lake. Retreat from the activity and embark on the drive to Murchison where by upon arrival, you will visit the top of the falls. The Murchison Falls as it was called by the Sir Samuel Baker on his Nile Expedition in commemoration of Sir Roderick Murchison the then President of the Royal Geographical Society stands as the most powerful water fall in the whole world since the Nile squeeze’s itself to pass through a less than 8m gorge before falling 43m below to what has been termed as the Devil’s Cauldron forming a plume of spray and a thunderous roar marked with a trade mark rain bow. Retire from the activity and transfer to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

    Day 11: Do morning game drive and afternoon Nile launch cruise

    After an early cup of coffee at your lodge, embark on the morning game drive in the rolling savannah plains of Murchison Falls National Park. The largest savannah Park in Uganda supports counts of elephants, buffaloes, Rothschild Giraffes, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Uganda Kobs, lions, leopards, waterbucks, Oribis among other Species and the possibility of encountering all these exist on the morning game drive activity. The game drive tends to last 3 – 4 hours. Return to the lodge for short relaxation and lunch after which you will gather at Paraa jetty to embark on a thrilling Nile launch cruise to the bottom of the falls. The cruise is a thrilling encounter on the mystical wastes of the Nile filled with counts of Hippos and Nile crocodiles not forgetting the lucky views of the shoe bill stork on the River bank. Retire from the activity and return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

    Day 12: Transfer to Kampala. Visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route.

    After breakfast, embark on the transfer to Kampala 311km about 5 hours’ drive excluding stops en route. You will branch off from the main road at Nakitoma for 7km to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track the white Rhino which only exist in this protected area in the whole of Uganda. The Rhinos which go extinct in 1983 saw their re-introduction in 2005 for re-breeding and later release back to the wilderness. Trekking the Rhinos which are among the big five land animals in the savannah thicket of Ziwa is very rewarding to encounter. Retreat from the activity and embark in the drive to Kampala arriving in the evening to mark the end of your safari.
