5 Days Rwanda Safari – DETAILED SAFARI ITINERARY.
Day 1 of the 5 Days Rwanda Safari: Visit the Gisozi genocide memorial & transfer to Akagera National Park
After your breakfast at your place of stay in Kigali city embark on the drive to the Gisozi genocide memorial to pay a visit to the counts of Rwandese who lost their dear lives during the bloody genocide that befell Rwanda in the year 1994. The number of skulls line in the building and the respective writings gives you a fresh picture of what exactly transpired during that period. After this encounter, you will embark on the transfer to Akagera National Park in the East of Rwanda driving through impressive rural landscapes that have got amazing scenic views from 135km about a 2 ½ hours’ drive. The traditional long-horned cattle in Rwamagana district will welcome you as changing the terrain from the hilly landscapes of the central to the plain landscapes of the east where the Akagera is situated. Arrive in the afternoon for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 2 of the 5 Days Rwanda Safari: Do morning game drive & afternoon boat cruise
After an early cup of coffee, embark on the morning game drive exploring the rolling savannah landscapes of the park with the impressive plains that stretch to the border of Tanzania dotted with counts of wild game. The game drive in the morning exposes you to counts of elephants, buffaloes, Masai giraffes, antelopes like Impala, bushbucks, waterbucks among others, the predators including leopards among other wild game that thrive in this natural habitat. The stretch to the upper hills of Mutumba presents a rewarding encounter on your safari in Rwanda. You retreat from this activity that lasts 3 – 4 hours and returns to the lodge for relaxation and lunch. In the afternoon, you will connect to Lake Ihema for a thrilling boat cruise that offers you an opportunity to encounter Rwanda’s second largest lake which has counts of Hippos and Nile Crocodiles not forgetting a range of water birds that dwell on the lake shores. Retire from dinner and overnight

Day 3 of the 5 Days Rwanda Safari: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Visit the National Institute of Rwandan Museums & the Nyanza Palace en route in Butare
After breakfast, embark on the transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southwest of Rwanda 320km about 5 hours’ drive excluding stops en route. You will make a stop in Butare province to visit the National Institute of Rwanda Museums with one of the largest ethnographic museums in East Africa and the Nyanza palace which is the home to the Rwandan Monarchs including the two Kings; Musinga and his predecessor King Rudahigwa. The traditional hut at the site which is the house of King Rudahigwa is crafted in an impressive architectural design very well preserved. The Inyambo cows with their long horns also make the site worth visiting. You will have lunch in Butare before proceeding to Nyungwe arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 4 of the 5 Days Rwanda Safari: Do Morning Chimpanzee Trekking & afternoon Nyungwe Canopy Walk
After breakfast, embark on the chimpanzee trekking encounter in the prehistoric forests of Nyungwe. The trek starts at 8 am commencing with briefing at the park headquarters before proceeding to the forest in search of our closest cousins the Chimpanzees. Walking through the forest and eventually having a direct encounter with these chimpanzees for one (1) hour makes the chimp trek memorable. The species thrive in their natural habitats and they are impressive to look at as they munch fruits, roll themselves on the trees, mate and socialize. The activity tends to last between 2 – 5 hours after which you return to the lodge for lunch and short relaxation. In the afternoon, you gather at the Uwinka Visitor centre to embark on the famous Nyungwe Canopy walk which is the first of its kind in East Africa and the third in the whole of Africa. The canopy walkway is raised to 40m from the ground and it is 90m long hanging above a steep deep valley with impressive scenic views of the landscapes and the flora and faunal species that are found in the area. Retire in the evening to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 5 of the 5 Days Rwanda Safari: Do colobus Monkey tracking & transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, embark on the Colobus Monkey tracking in the forest of Nyungwe. Nyungwe Forest is very diverse and when it comes to primates, it is stocked with 13 species which makes it a favourable primate destination in Rwanda. The colobus monkey tracking also commences at 8 am in the morning and then you head to forests in search of these impressive species. Dressed in white and black, the colobus monkeys are encountered rolling themselves in the trees and swinging in the forest in a very large grouping of over 400 numbers which is the largest on the whole continent of Africa. The direct encounter with them lasts one hour after which you will return to the starting point and embark on the transfer to Kigali city 268km about 6 hours’ drive.

Ruzizi Tented Lodge is a luxury tented accommodation facility in Akagera National Park. It offers accommodation in a range of twenty (20) beds that are connected by walkways. Ruzizi Tented Camp has nine (9) tents which can up to twenty (20) clients.
Akagera Game Lodge is located within the park close to its southern entrance. The Lodge features a swimming pool, conference center and a tennis court. Accommodation is offered in standard rooms, deluxe, family and Junior Suite. The lodge features over 60 bed rooms.

Positioned at 2km distance outside Nyungwe Forest National Park. Gisakura Guesthouse offers accommodation in twin, double and triple rooms which are self-contained and with provision of warm water on request. The Guesthouse also features a good restaurant.
Accommodation at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel is offered in twelve (12) units and four (4) of these feature twin beds while the eight (8) are apartments featuring queen sized beds. The rooms are self-contained. The Hotel also has a restaurant and a well-stocked bar.

Virunga Lodge is a luxury accommodation located on a ridge with impressive views of the Virunga massif. Accommodation is presented in eight (8) bandas and each banda features a private terrace with impressive views of the Virunga massif.
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is positioned close to the Volcanoes Park Headquarters is about few minutes’ drive. Accommodation is provided in six cottages with two (2) suites with private verandas, inbuilt ablutions and living room overseeing fireplace.

Volcanoes National Park, Also known as Parc Nationale des Volcanos in French, the Volcanoes National Park is located in the north west of Rwanda protecting the Rwandan side of the Virunga massif thus bordering with Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Congo’ Virunga National Park.
Nyungwe Forest National Park, Positioned in the south west of Rwanda, the Nyungwe Forest National Park overlooks the Democratic Republic of Congo border to the west and the Republic of Burundi in the south. The Nyungwe is noted to be one of the ancient forests of Africa and is known to have survived the last ice age. The Nyungwe forest is noted to one of the largest mountain forests in East Africa and at the moment is considered to be the most conserved forest in the Central African Highlands.
Akagera National Park is positioned in the north east of Rwanda overlooking the plains of Tanzania. It extends over a geographical spread of 1122 km2 and under a public private partnership arrangement of African Parks and Rwanda Development Board since 2010.The park is named after the River Akagera which is one of the sources of the Nile River which is the longest in the world. The River feeds in the chain of lakes that mark the floor of the Akagera plains including Lake Ihema which is the second largest in the whole of Rwanda.
